FLASHBACK: SES volunteers search a stretch of the Bunya Highway heading towards Wondai on October 10

October 22, 2024

The disappearance of Jack McLennan in the Murgon area on October 4 is not considered suspicious at this stage, police told media in Toowoomba on Tuesday afternoon.

Detective Acting Inspector Brian Collins, Darling Downs District, said the Homicide Investigation Unit had been brought in as investigators to use “specialist methodologies” to help local detectives with their inquiries.

He admitted it was quite unusual for someone to disappear without a trace however police had no “people of interest”.

“There are several witnesses whom detectives and homicide investigators are following up with and obtaining statements from, and that’s coupled with collating CCTV footage and reviewing that footage,” he said.

He said Jack had been with some associates “sharing time together” before he disappeared.

They had been spoken to and were co-operating with the investigation. They were not known to police.

Det Act Insp Collins said police were looking to hear from anyone who might have seen anyone while travelling along the Bunya Highway between Murgon and Wondai on the evening and into the morning of October 4-5.

“Also, we are looking for anyone who may have relevant dashcam from that stretch of road on that evening,” he said.

“We are still seeking assistance from any people who may have been camping at the Ficks Crossing camping ground on the evening and night of October 4.

“In particular, a person who may have been camping in a dark-coloured vehicle with a rooftop tent.”

He said anyone who had any information about the whereabouts of Jack should contact police immediately.

Det Act Insp Collins said police had grave concerns about Jack’s well-being.

They were satisfied that all areas relevant to the information they knew about had been searched.

“However, (after) further investigations, searches may continue in more relevant spots as we progress with the investigation,” Det Act Insp Collins said.
