Wondai Wolves’ Asofono Lemalu scores for the Burnett Brahmans in the 47th Battalion Plate Final

July 21, 2024

southburnett.com.au provided a wrap-up of the 47th Battalion rugby league carnival in Kingaroy last Monday … but we didn’t have an opportunity then to share photos of the local teams in action.

Both the Burnett Brahmans (men) and Wide Bay Bulls (women) teams included many South Burnett-based players.

And both squads had a very busy two days, playing three games apiece (see results, below).

The Brahmans especially had a top carnival, bringing home the Plate Final for the second year in a row.

Editorial note:

A week after the 47th Battalion rugby league carnival in Kingaroy, it’s a good time to reflect on the huge effort to make this event happen.

It was not only the players, trainers and support staff who had a big weekend, all the volunteers from the South Burnett Rugby League and local clubs – especially the Kingaroy Red Ants – would have been exhausted after months of planning, ground preparation and two big days at T.J. O’Neill and Lyle Vidler ovals.

The grounds hosted 21 senior games of league between them, which is a massive ask in itself, but volunteers also had to provide meals, keep the canteen and bar ticking over and clean up afterwards.

The carnival also would not have happened without the match officials – referees and touch judges – and of course, the sponsors.

It’s just a pity that not more South Burnett residents turned out to support our local players; there seemed to be plenty of Bundaberg and Toowoomba supporters cheering …
