The Kingaroy Bees junior motorcycle speedway club’s annual Barry Stead Memorial Race Day on Saturday featured some keen riding on the tight Kingaroy Showgrounds track.

Barry, who died in 2018, was a long-time supporter and volunteer with the club and every year since 2019 a race has been held – and a shield presented – in his honour.

This year’s winner was North Queensland rider Ky Mitchell who also took out the 2023 event.

It’s been a big year for young Ky, who in January was named Burdekin Shire Council’s Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the council’s Australia Day Awards.

And last November, Ky won the Under 16 Australian 125cc solo championship at Tamworth and combined with South Burnett rider Corey Van Elswyk to take out the Under 16 125cc teams championship.

The Barry Stead Memorial was raced as part of the Kingaroy Bee’s Club Day 3 on Saturday morning; Club Day 4 was raced in the afternoon (see results, below).

Points from both Club Days will go towards the riders’ overall club championship points.
