The annual Mother’s Day Classic – a fundraiser for breast cancer research – will be held on the South Burnett Rail Trail this Sunday (May 12).

Registrations can be made online for various walks and runs, which will begin at Wondai:

The Mother’s Day Classic has been held in the South Burnett since 2012, originally in Kingaroy before shifting to Wondai in 2017.

Over that time, the event has raised thousands of dollars locally for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Across Australia, event organisers expect about 80,000 people to take part in similar events at 75 locations.

They hope to raise more than the $2.5 million donated last year.

This year, the Mother’s Day Classic is also partnering with the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation as a second beneficiary of fundraising.

Breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women.

Thanks to research, the five-year survival rate has increased from 84 per cent to 92 per cent since 1998.

But sadly, the five-year survival rate for ovarian cancer is just 49 per cent.
