FLASHBACK: Then Torres Shire Mayor Vonda Malone with then-Cherbourg Mayor Arnold Murray in Cherbourg in 2017 … Ms Malone has been named as a member of the Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry

April 26, 2024

The State Government has named the members who will guide its promised Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry and First Nations Treaty Institute Council.

The two bodies are part of the State Government’s “Path to Treaty” process, which the LNP has previously announced that it no longer supports.

The members named on Friday are:

  • Truth-Telling and Healing Inquiry: Joshua Creamer, Roslyn Atkinson AO, Cheryl Buchanan, Ivan Ingram and Vonda Malone
  • First Nations Treaty Institute Council: Albert Bowie, Seleena Blackley, Prof Valerie Cooms, Michelle Deshong, Dr Janine Gertz, Dr Tracey Harbour, Assoc Prof Phillip Mills OAM, Prof Cindy Shannon AM, David Saylor and Ivy Trevallion

The aim of the Inquiry is to act independently to provide a public platform to listen and record stories, educate and build understanding about First Nations history and culture, and make recommendations for next steps.

The Institute is a statutory body which would also operate independently from the State Government. Its role is to co-develop a treaty-making framework with the State Government and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to scope, initiate and participate in Treaty negotiations with the State.

The Path to Treaty Act 2023, which established the legal framework to set up the Inquiry and the Institute, was passed by State Parliament on May 10 last year with bi-partisan support.

However in October – after the resounding “No” vote in Queensland at the Federal Government’s referendum to establish a “Voice” – Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said the LNP would no longer support the Path to Treaty process in Queensland and would repeal the legislation if elected.

“In the days since the referendum as I have travelled throughout the State, it has become clear to me the Path to Treaty will only create further division,” Mr Crisafulli said in a statement reported by the ABC.

“The LNP can no longer support a Path to Treaty and will not pursue one if elected to government.”
