A surprisingly large crowd turned out at Wondai Art Gallery on Friday to enjoy the opening night of the annual Wondai Garden Expo Art competition.

Surprising, because there was plenty of rain about … but then that’s something gardeners actually enjoy!

The annual competition, which boasts good cash prizes, is sponsored by the Wondai Garden Expo’s organising committee and always attracts a lot of floral or garden-themed artworks.

Entries in the competition filled the three gallery spaces.

The exhibition was officially opened by Damion Biltoft, president of the Wondai Garden Expo.

Gallery president Elaine Madill also took the opportunity at the opening to announce a new category for the annual South Burnett Regional Art Competition in October.

The new category is “Fabulous Fakes”, ie. copies of well-known paintings.

Gallery patron Cr Ros Heit also promoted the upcoming Wondai Country Running Festival on June 22-23.

Registrations to take part are now open online.

There is also new merchandise available, including a soft jacket which can be pre-ordered online

The Autumn Wondai Garden Expo will be held at the Wondai Sportsgrounds on April 20-21.

The exhibition will remain on show at the Wondai Art Gallery until Saturday, April 27. Entry is free and the gallery is open from 10:00am to 3:00pm, daily.

Footnote: Tingoora artist Robyn Dower will be taking over the gallery next month with “Subject To Change”, which promises to be a quirky exhibition with “a strange twist”.
