Cherbourg Hornets came out victorious at the recent Mundubbera 9s rugby league carnival.

The visitors downed the Gayndah Gladiators 26-11 last Saturday after leading 15-7 at half-time.

Also taking part in the round-robin carnival were the Wondai Wolves, Mundubbera Tigers, Monto Roos, Eidsvold Eagles and Calliope Roosters.

Wondai finished in fourth spot.

Hornets club president George Fisher told southburnett.com.au it had been a good start to the season, building on players’ recent performances at the Sunshine Coast Bunyas Carnival.

He said Cherbourg went through the Mundubbera 9s carnival undefeated, playing Wondai twice, Gayndah twice as well as Eidsvold and Calliope.

“Our first game against Gayndah was a lot closer than the final,” he said.

George said Cherbourg’s standout players at the carnival were Vincent Law, Darron Saltner-Bligh, John Blair, Keith Gadd Jnr, George Fisher Jnr and newcomer Rachine Doyle.

Doyle recently joined the Hornets after playing in the Capras 2023 Mal Meninga Cup squad.

The Wondai Wolves’ Open Women’s side also took part in an exhibition game against the Central Burnett Fillies.

A sprint competition was held at half-time during this game, which was won by Cherbourg player John Walsh.
