Gympie Regional Council has confirmed that Mayor Glen Hartwig suffered a neck fracture during his car crash on March 4.

In a statement released on Friday, a Council spokesperson said the Mayor did not require surgery but was being fitted with a neck brace.

“The Mayor wishes to express his heartfelt gratitude to those community members that stopped and offered assistance at the scene, one of which had been trained in first aid by his mother,” the statement said.

“These residents kept them calm and set them at ease.

“The Mayor has said ‘while I don’t know your names, we really appreciate your assistance, love and care’.

“The Mayor and Mayoress also extend a special thank you to the dedicated healthcare professionals at the Gympie Hospital for providing exceptional care and attention to detail. They are deeply appreciative for the hospital staff’s expertise and commitment to the wellbeing of our community members.

“The Mayoress is in good health. Mayor Hartwig does not require surgery, and is being fitted with a brace for a fracture in his neck, and is feeling fine albeit sore.

“The Mayor and Mayoress also thank the community for the outpouring of support and messages that they have received: ‘We are grateful to live in a region where people care’.”
