Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig and his wife Talitha Passey … injured in crash

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig is expected to have further scans on Tuesday after being involved in a serious crash at Ross Creek, near Goomboorian, on Monday night.

Mayor Hartwig and his wife Talitha Passey were returning from a “Meet The Candidates” night at Goomboorian Hall when the incident occurred on Pokela Road.

The couple were on their way to another forum at Mothar Mountain Hall – due to start at 6:45pm – when their vehicle crashed down an embankment and rolled.

Emergency services were called to the incident at 6:51pm.

A QFES spokesperson said the two people inside managed to extricate themselves from the wreckage before they arrived.

QAS paramedics treated the couple at the scene before they were transported by ambulance to Gympie Hospital.

A QAS spokesperson said the pair had minor injuries.

southburnett.com.au understands Mayor Hartwig is now being assessed for a suspected injury to a vertebra in his neck.

He has been transferred to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for scans.

Statement from Gympie Regional Council:

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig and the Mayoress were involved in a car accident last night after leaving the Meet the Candidates forum in Goomboorian.

Mayor Hartwig is currently receiving the relevant care in hospital and is in good spirits, and the Mayoress has been discharged and is in good health.

Despite this unfortunate incident, Mayor Hartwig remains committed to serving our community and has said that he looks forward to returning to his duties as soon as possible while continuing his campaign.

Mayor Hartwig will return to the Senior Citizens Centre as soon as possible as early voting has commenced.

Due to the personal nature of this event, Council will not be answering any further questions at this stage.
