Queensland Rugby League  CEO Ben Ikin presented Fletch Prendergast with the SBRL Junior Eagle of the Year Award at last year’s South Burnett Rugby League annual awards

South Burnett 2023 Junior Eagle of the Year Fletch Prendergast’s rugby league career looks to be taking off.

Prendergast has been selected as captain of the Western Clydesdales for Saturday’s Round 2 Mal Meninga Cup game against the Wide Bay Bulls.

The game will be played at Brothers Sportsground in Bundaberg.

The Mal Meninga Cup is a statewide Queensland Rugby League competition for players aged under 18, and is considered a stepping stone to the Queensland (Hostplus) Cup

Another South Burnett player, Harrison Braithwaite, will be turning out at as five-eight for the Wide Bay Bulls’ Cyril Connell Cup side at the same venue on Saturday.

Braithwaite was presented with the Allan Trunks BTN Values & True Spirit Award at last year’s SBRL awards for his efforts with the South Burnett Eagles.

The Cyril Connell Cup is a statewide competition run by the QRL for Under 16s players.

Another former South Burnett Eagle, former Kingaroy Red Ant Jack Garrod, has been named in the Gold Coast Titans trial side for this weekend.

Garrod has been selected in the backs for the Titans clash against the Dolphins at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The career of another former local rugby league player is also getting under way.

Former Cherbourg Hornets junior Leroy Malone, 15, has been playing with Toowoomba Valleys in the Toowoomba Junior Rugby League competition.

Malone signed a contract earlier this month with the Brisbane Broncos and will begin training with their youth squad.
