South Burnett Regional Council has turned down separate applications to permanently close two little-used rural roads in Moffatdale and Wengenville, but has agreed to temporarily close both instead.

At January’s general meeting on Wednesday, Councillors were told an application to permanently close an unmaintained road between Bond Street and Murgon-Barambah Road in Moffatdale had been received from an adjoining landholder.

They also heard a second application had been received from a different landholder seeking the permanent closure of a section of Dugdell Road in Wengenville.

In both cases, officers recommended Councillors reject the permanent closure of either road.

This was because the long-term use of the road reserve was unknown and permanent closure could affect any future interconnection of roads, any necessary future infrastructure and any potential new developments in the area.

Instead, they recommended Councillors consider a temporary road closure, providing the Department Of Resources agreed and there was no cost to Council to do it.

A temporary closure, officers said, would enable the applicants to use the land without limiting any of Council’s future options.

Councillors agreed, and both motions were passed unanimously.
