The annual Wondai Christmas Carnival – a Christmas Eve tradition in the South Burnett – will be shifting to Wondai Showgrounds this year after difficulties securing Council permits.

A statement from the organisers, released on Monday, said the decision was “due to recent council regulations and the challenges posed in organising the event at Coronation Park”.

“This decision was not taken lightly, but it ensures a seamless continuation of the cherished holiday tradition while adhering to necessary regulations and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all attendees,” the statement continued.

“I deeply appreciate and understand the sentimental value of holding our Christmas Eve Carnival in Coronation Park, a tradition cherished by our community for over 70 years,” Wondai Show Society president Amanda Palmer said.

“However, in light of recent challenges and circumstances beyond our control, the decision to relocate the carnival to the showgrounds was voted upon at our recent meeting.

“This move ensures not only the continuation of our beloved carnival but also guarantees a smooth and secure celebration for all.

“We look forward to creating new memories at the showgrounds and appreciate the community’s understanding and continued support in these unprecedented times.”

The Wondai Christmas Eve Carnival will be held from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at the showgrounds (15 Kent Street, Wondai).

This year, there will also be a Carnival Bar running, where attendees can toast the holiday season, as well as an array of market stalls.

The Show Society statement listed the reasons for the venue change:

1. Compliance with Council Regulations: The Wondai Show Society is committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and adherence to local regulations. The move to the showgrounds allows for better compliance with recent Council guidelines, ensuring a secure environment for all participants.

2. Infrastructure and Facilities: The Wondai Showgrounds already boast robust infrastructure and facilities, making it an ideal venue for hosting large-scale community events. This change guarantees a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the Christmas Eve Carnival.

3. Community Convenience: Moving the carnival to the showgrounds simplifies logistics for both organisers and attendees, providing familiarity and easy access for the local community.
