Rural fire brigade units at the Knight Street blaze on Wednesday afternoon

A fire burning in a paddock behind Knight Street cast a pall of smoke over Kingaroy on Thursday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the incident just before 3:30pm, with heavy plumes of dark smoke already rising into the air.

At 3:45pm, QFES issued an “Avoid Smoke” warning for the blaze to Kingaroy residents.

At 4:30pm, there were 11 units at the fire – a mix of urban and rural brigades.

A QFES spokesperson said firefighters had put in breaks to contain the flames.

At 4:45pm, the western and eastern edges had been contained, with fire crews concentrating on the southern and northern areas.

No structures were under threat.

Police and ambulance crews were also in attendance.

Flames could be seen from Alford Street East, burning in bushland behind Knight and Somerset streets
