Large clouds of grey and black smoke billowed from a large grass fire burning near Barber Street in Cherbourg on Tuesday afternoon.

The first fire crew arrived at the scene about 1:30pm, with five more units quickly joining them at the incident.

A QFES spokesperson said fire crews immediately back-burned one side of the blaze to make nearby properties safe.

Crews then carried out similar burns on the remaining three sides to prevent the fire spreading into neighbouring bushland.

At 2:30pm, they reported the blaze was burning within containment lines.

Fire crews will remain on site to monitor progress and ensure the fire is extinguished.
