Two staff members from Saint Mary’s Catholic College in Kingaroy have been recognised in this year’s Spirit of Catholic Education Awards.

Principal Carmel O’Brien was nominated from the Brisbane Archdiocese, and Indigenous support officer Niketa Law was nominated for the Aunty Joan Hendriks Reconciliation Award.

The statewide awards are held annually in conjunction with Catholic Education Week to celebrate outstanding contributions to Catholic education in Queensland.

A special school assembly was held in the Maryknoll Centre at the school on Tuesday morning as part of the school’s Catholic Education Week activities to acknowledge the pair.

After a student-led liturgy, intraschool awards were also presented to five teachers and two students: Year 12 student Stella Penny and Year 3 student Hugo Wells.

Hugo scored an amazing 93.8 per cent in the recent International Maths Olympiad Challenge, putting him in the top 8 per cent in the world.
