The Queensland Youth Orchestra offered concertgoers in Kingaroy Town Hall a rare opportunity last week to enjoy elite musicianship in a free concert.

The touring group, from Brisbane, attracted a good crowd to hear orchestral favourites by classical composers Rossini, Beethoven, Puccini and Handel as well as the 20th century master Schönberg.

The orchestra, which features musicians aged from 8 to 25, was conducted by Chen Yang.

Chen was formerly concert master at the Queensland Theatre Orchestra (later renamed the Queensland Philharmonic) and was in the first violin section of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra for eight years.

He was joined at the Kingaroy concert by the Queensland Youth Orchestra’s 2023 Artist in Residence, soprano Nina Korbe, who stunned the audience with her vocal performance.

The QYO performance was sponsored by philanthropist Timothy Fairfax AC.
