St John Ambulance has expanded its Eye Van service to more parts of regional Queensland, including into the South Burnett.

A spokesperson said the Eye Van was a fully equipped ophthalmology and optometry treatment centre, with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment instruments.

It has a special focus on reducing preventable blindness among First Nations people with diabetes but everyone can access the service.

The van, which visited Cherbourg recently, is equipped to manage the three most common complications of diabetes: refractive change, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

St John Ambulance recently celebrated 140 years of serving the Australian community.

It has launched an online appeal to raise funds for programs such as the St John Eye Van.
