The younger “Old Stags” were the eventual winners on the day

Nanango Stags weren’t able to pull together an A Grade team for the 2023 South Burnett Rugby League competition, but more than enough blue-and-white jumpers gathered together last Saturday for the club’s special Old Boys’ Day at Fred Kassulke Oval.

“Younger” Old Stags (basically under 30s) took on the “Older” Old Stags in a friendly game played across four 15-minute quarters.

(We said “basically” because some of the players appeared to have swapped sides after their team photos …)

A big crowd of Nanango supporters cheered on from the sidelines as the two sides ran around the park.

Some of the players were fresh from earlier A Grade matches played in Kingaroy but still found extra juice in their tanks for the spectacle.

At half-time the Younger Stags were ahead 12-6, and eventually won 28-18 – although the scores didn’t really matter as everyone was simply out there to have a good time.

The day enabled the football club to raise some funds from across the bar, which isn’t open when junior players are on the field.

The Old Boys match followed a full round of SBRL junior games from Under 6s to Under 14s which ensured a good crowd was in place for the featured game.

The older “Old Stags” weren’t disgraced with many still actually playing in the SBRL A Grade competition
