Years 9-12 students in the Toowoomba Regional Council area have been invited to take part in the Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards.
Mayor Paul Antonio said the awards were being conducted in collaboration with Telstra, the University of Southern Queensland, TAFE Queensland and Toowoomba & Surat Basin Enterprise.
“The competition challenges the brightest minds in our high school students studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) from Years 9 to 12,” Mayor Antonio said.
“We are challenging students to display their most innovative projects by unlocking their problem-solving potential to take their big ideas to the next level.
“The judges are looking for the next innovative idea or a new and creative use of an existing concept or technology in any field, ranging from social media, gaming technology to robotics, health, agriculture, security, conservation, construction, energy, or recreation.
“The awards highlight the importance of studying STEM fields and how potential advances can benefit the Toowoomba Region and expand a knowledge-based economy.
“The program aims to nurture students’ existing knowledge and inspire them to be innovative and collaborative. It will encourage teamwork between students, giving them a chance to present their ideas and concepts to a wider community audience and recognise their efforts and achievements.”
The program is also designed to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among entrants by connecting them with the region’s business community.
Phase 1 entries close on May 17.
