Thrashers started their 2023 season with a bang, securing a hard-fought victory against the Dalby Wheatmen in Toowoomba on Saturday.

Club president Jamie Shirlaw said the Thrashers had moved up to B Grade in the Downs Rugby competition this year.

“The Thrashers have had a challenging start to the year with low player numbers. However, we were able to overcome this challenge by partnering with the USQ Saints, who provided additional players to ensure that the team had enough numbers to compete,” Jamie said.

“The match was a thrilling encounter from start to finish, with both teams showing great determination and skill on the field in a very physical match.”

The final score was 20-12.

“Eparama Turaganivlu, who captained the Thrashers, led the team to victory with a strong performance both on and off the field,” Jamie said.

“His leadership and experience were crucial in securing the win against Dalby.

“We’re thrilled to have started the season with a win.

“It’s been a challenging start to the year, but we’re determined to continue working hard and building momentum as the season progresses.

“We’re grateful to the USQ Saints for their support and look forward to working together this year.”

The Thrashers will next be in action on April 15, taking on St George at Gallas Fox Park in Roma.

Four games are scheduled to be played in Kingaroy this season: May 6 (Sponsors Day), June 24 (Old Boys Day), July 8 (Multicultural Day) and July 22 (Sunpork Day).
