First Settlers Memorial Park at Benarkin is popular with tourists as a day use area

February 7, 2023

First Settlers Memorial Park at Benarkin will get a $109,498 upgrade, including fencing and the erection of a new picnic shelter.

South Burnett councillors voted unanimously to support the upgrade at the Infrastructure, Environment and Compliance Standing Committee last Wednesday.

The improvements follow consultations with Benarkin residents last December.

The day use area will be fenced on all four sides – at a cost of $51,780 – to provide a safe playground and picnic area for young children.

The new picnic shelter is estimated to cost $28,000.

Other small improvements include a new kitchen sink with running water in the Lions Shelter, removal of the wood barbecue and new bollards around the water treatment area to prevent vehicles parking in this zone.
