A development application has been lodged with Gympie Regional Council to build a lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Lower Wonga.
The proposed development, by Equis Australia, would be constructed on a 10ha block about 800m from the Woolooga Substation on Gympie-Woolooga Road.
The BESS would have a storage capacity of up to 200MW and a discharge capacity of up to 800MWh.
Equis says this is enough power to supply electricity for up to 53,000 homes for four hours.
If approved, the BESS would be connected to Queensland’s electricity grid via a Powerlink transmission line to the 275kV Woolooga Substation.
Equis says the project would create about 425 full-time jobs during construction with five ongoing jobs afterwards.
Two solar farm developments are located nearby:
- Lightsource BP’s 500ha project at Woolooga which is under construction. This development consists of three sites (Woolooga 1, Woolooga 2 Site B and Woolooga 2 Site A).
- Bordstrong Developments’ 350MW project at Lower Wonga. Construction is expected to start this year.
