A genuine World War I Light Horse saddle now has pride of place in Heritage House’s military museum at Yarraman, thanks to a generous donation.

Yarraman and District Historical Society president Helene Johnson said the saddle had been donated by the 5th Light Horse Regiment, Gympie Troop.

Members of the association visited Heritage House last Thursday to hand over the saddle and halter, bridle and bit and some uniform pieces.

Models of a Light Horseman and his mount have been a centrepiece of the museum’s display for many years.

But now, thanks to the Gympie Troop, they are even more historically accurate.

“This happy, well-informed group replaced the existing horse’s tack and added a few little – but needed – extras to our Light Horseman’s uniform,” Heritage House volunteer Jocelyn Hansen said.

The military museum has been a part of Heritage House for decades, but was expanded in 2015.
