Wondai Regional Art Gallery patron Ros Heit and curator Elaine Madill will be hosting a special Australia Day activity at the gallery on January 26 for would-be artists, young and old

December 21, 2022

Wondai Art Gallery will be running a special art competition on Australia Day (January 26) with the theme “Reflect, Respect, Celebrate”.

The day will include a free breakfast and flag-raising ceremony, accompanied by the Wondai & District Town Band, in the park behind the art gallery from 7:00am.

Everyone will then be invited to come back into The Studio, inside Wondai Art Gallery, to paint, draw or sketch.

There’ll be two artists on hand to provide inspiration and all materials will be provided.

Artists of all ages – young and old – have been invited to take part.

And the best thing … it’s free!

The all-day activity has been made been possible via a grant from the National Australia Day Council.

Gallery patron Ros Heit and curator Elaine Madill decided to apply for the grant and were over the moon when it was successful.

Businesses in Wondai have supplied all the prizes which will be vouchers from local stores.

At 5:00pm, judges will cast an eye over the completed works and select the winners in various categories.

At 6:00pm, everyone will be invited back into The Studio for a pizza celebration, live music and the announcement of the winners.

Ros said the grant was designed to bring communities together and assist in business recovery from the challenges of COVID.

“We intend to use local artists to support the artwork creation, a local photographer and source all the supplies locally to help small businesses,” she said.

“We are very grateful to the National Australia Day Council for this grant and encourage local residents across the South Burnett to come and join us for breakfast, the art creation and the pizza evening.

“It promises to be a great day to Reflect, Respect and Celebrate Australia Day.”
