Wondai’s IGA supermarket has served the town for many years but it will soon undergo a major upgrade that will extend the supermarket’s size, product range and facilities for shoppers

July 20, 2022

Peries IGA supermarket in Wondai will be refurbished and expanded after the South Burnett Regional Council approved the company’s plans on Wednesday.

The rear of the supermarket will be extended by 6.2 metres and at least eight parking bays – including one disability parking bay – will be added.

The exterior of the existing building will also be modernised and the interior will undergo an extensive makeover that will include replacement of all existing plant and equipment.

The supermarket is located at the corner of Mackenzie and Scott streets, opposite Coronation Park, and has served as the town’s main grocery shopping outlet more than two decades.

Peries IGA Group general manager Sharon Griffin told southburnett.com.au the company was very excited about the Wondai project.

She said now that Council had given its approval, the next step would be to seek quotes for the work and select a builder.

However, because of current shortages of construction workers and materials due to the pandemic, she was unable to say when work would begin or precisely how long the project was likely to take.

However, the company’s preference was to get the upgrades under way as soon as possible.

“This is a fresh, exciting development that will bring a bigger range of items for our customers, and new things like cheese barges and a coffee machine,” Sharon said.

She emphasised the supermarket would continue to trade while the upgrade was in progress and they would try to minimise any affects on customers.

For example, old plant and equipment could be replaced by new units after normal shopping hours, and some temporary walls might be installed to separate customers from construction work.

Sharon said the Wondai store had received steadily growing patronage from the local community since it became part of the Peries IGA Group, and the company was keen to give back.

Peries IGA Group also operates IGA supermarkets in Kingaroy, Nanango and Yarraman, as well as eight others between Woodford and Mackay.

  1. Sounds great, not sure what a cheese barge is but it must be important and exciting to be in bold print

    • Yes, cheese “barges” had us puzzled initially, too, but after research we discovered it is a common term for a type of supermarket display cabinet.
