This melee under the posts results in an eight-point try to Murgon and then a Hornets’ send-off

June 24, 2022

Local derbies between Murgon and Cherbourg often produce fireworks but last Saturday’s A Grade rugby league game in Murgon was more fiery than most.

Four players were sin-binned at various stages and one sent off.

The second half was particularly eventful with Murgon awarded an eight-point try after a Cherbourg infringement in a tackle on the try scorer.

Murgon eventually ran out winners 32-26 in the close-fought game after leading 16-12 at half-time.

The Mustangs’ winning margin would have been greater except for an odd finish to the game …

When the siren sounded, most players seemed to think the game was over except the Hornets’ Jovan Gyemore who grabbed the ball, ran the length of the field and placed it under the posts.

It was his fourth try for the day which he duly converted as everyone else was walking off the field.

Murgon tries were scored by Karl Berlin (2), Elwyn Fewquandie (2), Alfred Watcho and Daron Saltner-Bligh. Saltner-Bligh kicked three conversions plus a penalty.

Cherbourg try scorers were Jovan Gyemore (4) and Clayton Weazel Jnr. Goals were kicked by George Fisher (2) and Gyemore.

A dart to the line by Nanango’s Ashley Smallwood is pulled up short … Smallwood scored two tries for the Stags

In the second A Grade game, Nanango 30 defeated Kingaroy 12 after leading 16-nil at half time.

Nanango were all over the Red Ants in the first half but Kingaroy came out firing after the break and scored two quick tries in three minutes.

Kingaroy managed to keep the Stags scoreless for the next 15 minutes but Nanango charged home with three more tries before the siren sounded.

Nanango tries were scored by Ashley Smallwood (2), Matt Mladenovic, Jack Mines, Jackson Mladenovic and Blake Harvey. Smallwood kicked three goals.

Kingaroy’s try scorers were Alex Pomfret and Mason Trappe. Blake Augustine kicked two goals.
