ALP candidate for Flynn, Matt Burnett, will resume duties as Gladstone Mayor this week after formally conceding defeat in the Federal Election.

Mr Burnett achieved an almost 7 per cent swing to Labor on a two-party preferred basis – and outpolled LNP candidate Colin Boyce in primary votes – but it was not enough to topple the LNP stronghold on Flynn.

Official Australian Electoral Commission results on Thursday showed Mr Burnett achieved 25,332 primary votes, ahead of Mr Boyce with 23,592.

The First Preference count also had the pair neck-and-neck: 26,877 votes (Burnett) to 26,870 (Boyce).

However, on a two-candidate preferred basis, the positions were swapped with Mr Boyce ahead with 39,569 votes to 36,330.

The AEC results show that Mr Boyce was the favoured candidate in the South Burnett with voters at local booths supporting him:

  • Proston – 175 votes (Boyce) to 78 (Burnett)
  • Wondai – 464 votes (Boyce) to 223 (Burnett)

Mr Burnett took a leave absence on April 18 from Gladstone Council to contest the election.

He was first elected to Gladstone City Council in 2000, became Deputy Mayor of Gladstone Regional Council in 2011 and has been Mayor since 2016.

A by-election to fill the vacant State seat of Callide – formerly held by Mr Boyce – will be held on June 18.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington has congratulated the three local LNP Members who were successful at the Federal Election.

“It is great news that Member for Maranoa David Littleproud and Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien have been returned as the local Federal representative in their respective regions,” she said.

“I am also very pleased that LNP candidate for Flynn, Colin Boyce, has secured the seat.

“I look forward to continuing my strong relationship with my neighbouring federal members and working with them on behalf of our shared communities.”
