South Burnett players put in a strong performance at the 47th Battalion rugby league carnival played in Gladstone at the weekend.

Three were picked in “merit” teams at the end of the carnival, recognising their performances during the competition.

Abbey Templeman, who played in the Wide Bay Bulls women’s team, was selected in the Women’s Merit Team, while George Fisher and Barwoo Fisher, from the Wide Bay Rangers, were picked in the Men’s Merit Team.

Overall, the Wide Bay teams had mixed success at the carnival.

In the men’s competition, Wide Bay Rangers 12 were defeated by eventual carnival winners Rockhampton Rustlers 20 in their first game on Saturday.

Barwoo Fisher and Elwyn Fewquandie scored Wide Bay tries, while George Fisher kicked two goals.

In their second game, Rangers 32 defeated Gladstone Raiders 18.

Maurice Fisher scored three tries, while Barwoo Fisher, George Fisher and Conan Holding scored one apiece. Goals were kicked by Elwyn Fewquandie and George Fisher.

On Sunday, South West Stockmen 22 defeated Rangers 18 in a tight game in the Plate Final.

The sides were locked 18-all at full-time and went into Golden Point extra time.

Wide Bay’s try scorers were George Fisher, Barwoo Fisher and Patrick Alberts. George Fisher kicked three goals.

Barwoo Fisher was named Player of the Match.

In the women’s competition, Wide Bay Bulls drew with Central Highlands 12-all in their first game.

Tamika Olive scored two tries for Wide Bay, but unfortunately the name of the third try scorer was not recorded.

Eventual carnival winners Toowoomba Clydesdales 34 then defeated Wide Bay 4. Liberty Coombes was Wide Bay’s try scorer.

Wide Bay then drew with Sunshine Coast Falcons 4-all. Captain Abbey Templeman scored the Wide Bay try.

Last Weekend’s Results

South Burnett Rugby League junior games were played at Ian “Bunny” Pearce Oval in Blackbutt, the first home games in the SBRL competition played in Blackbutt for nine years.

Under 14s

  • Nanango 20 def. Chinchilla 14 in Chinchilla
  • Kingaroy 28 def. Cherbourg 8 in Blackbutt

No senior games were played in the South Burnett due to the 47th Battalion carnival.

Kingaroy Red Ants Under 11s took part in the two-day Manktelow Challenge at Pittsworth on May 1-2, coming home with the “Spirit of the Carnival” award.

Junior SBRL games will be played at Wondai from 8:00am.

  • 11:20am – Under 14s – Cherbourg v Chinchilla
  • 12:20pm – Under 14s – Murgon v Nanango
  • 1:30pm – A Grade – Wondai v Murgon
  • 3:30pm – A Grade – Cherbourg v Nanango

South Burnett Eagles:

  • Under 15s – South Burnett v  Oakey Bears at Mickelborough Oval, Oakey (TJRL)
  • Under 18s – South Burnett v Bundaberg in the Wide Bay Under 18s Challenge at Bundaberg
