Police are investigating a fire which destroyed a house in Broadway Street, Cherbourg, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the blaze about 2:15am.

Four fire crews attended and found the single-storey timber building well alight when they arrived.

They worked to extinguish the blaze but could do nothing to save the building, which was destroyed.

Firefighters remained on scene until about 4:30am, ensuring the area was safe.

A police spokesperson said investigators were treating the cause of the fire as suspicious at this stage.

“It looks like it may have been deliberately lit,” the spokesperson said.

A fire investigator was on site on Tuesday morning.

Police said the building was unoccupied.

UPDATE May 9, 2022: Police believe a small grass fire lit in Broadway Street about midnight by a number of suspects spread to the house which then caught on fire. Investigations are continuing into the incident.
