The South Burnett Race Club’s traditional Anzac Day races went ahead at the Wondai track on Monday afternoon, despite the intermittent showers.

The grey skies didn’t deter punters who filled the betting ring or entrants in the Fashions of the Field contest which had a “Poppies and Pearls” theme.

And the rain didn’t affect the sand track, which was officially rated as “good”.

The six races attracted good fields.

Nanango trainer Glenn Richardson just missed out in the prestigious Wondai Diggers Cup, bringing home the second and third placegetters. The cup was taken home by Toowoomba-trained Hard Stride, ridden by Paul Hamblin.

Elsewhere on the track, jockeys Todd Banks and Justin Stanley escaped serious injuries after falling from their mounts in Race 2.

Eddiegato, with Banks on board, shifted out abruptly at the 100m mark despite the best efforts of its jockey, colliding with Attackabeel.

Neither horse was hurt but Banks was excused from his rides for the rest of the meeting after injuring his hand.
