The flood-hit communities of Booubyjan, Goomeri and Kilkivan played host to a visit by Queensland Governor Dr Jeannette Young PSM on Tuesday.

The Governor, who was accompanied by her husband Prof Graeme Nimmo, was welcomed to the region by Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig at a small reception in Kilkivan.

She then visited flood-affected properties between Kilkivan and Tansey before travelling to Booubyjan to enjoy a barbecue lunch with local residents at Booubyjan Hall.

Governor Young heard stories about the traumatic events of last month’s flash flood, which claimed the life of 14-year-old girl as well as washing away hundreds of head of cattle and kilometres of fencing.

An afternoon tea at Goomeri’s Hall of Memory provided another opportunity for first responders and more local residents to share their stories.

On Wednesday morning,  the Vice Regal couple received a formal briefing at the Gympie Regional Council Chambers about recovery efforts.

While in Gympie, Governor Young also laid a wreath at the RSL Memorial Wall and fulfilled a promise to visit Gympie Hospital.
