Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien

Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien crossed the floor in Federal Parliament on Wednesday to support a motion by United Australia Party leader Craig Kelly to end vaccine mandates.

Mr O’Brien was joined in the three-man protest vote by retiring LNP Member for Dawson George Christensen who has previously compared vaccine mandates to decrees by dictators such as “Stalin, Mao, Hitler and Pol Pot”.

Mr O’Brien has previously stated he is pro-vaccination but was concerned about the effect vaccine mandates were having on small businesses.

Mr Kelly’s motion was defeated.

In October, Mr O’Brien joined with Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington to issue a short joint statement backing Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council’s call for residents to get vaccinated.

“Now that we have better access to vaccines in our region we encourage community members to take up this opportunity and get vaccinated so we can look after our family and friends,” Mrs Frecklington and Mr O’Brien said.

  1. If you happen to be an anti-vaxxer, please consider the danger you are posing to friends, fellow workers, staff in shops etc.\, and especially loved ones, even if you consider the risk to your own health to be minimal.

People for whom there is no medical reason for not getting vaccinated and yet still refuse to be vaccinated are letting “Team Australia” down. They are at far greater risk of catching COVID-19, passing it on to others, ending up in hospital, and of dying from the virus.
