The new SBC Pop Orchestra includes young and older players, some from the same family

November 29, 2021

The South Burnett Community Young Orchestra – a spin-off from the popular South Burnett Community Orchestra – has a new name.

The new “SBC Pop Orchestra” was unveiled to an appreciative audience at its launch concert in Kingaroy’s Uniting Church Hall last Saturday.

The Young Orchestra was originally set up in 2019 with funding through the Red Earth Community Foundation and the Foundation for Rural and Regional renewal (FRRR).

The rebranding was decided upon to more accurately reflect the make up of the orchestra – which serves as a pathway into the SBCO.

There are young musicians as well as older ones who haven’t touched an instrument for years.

There’s also a few SBCO musicians exploring different instruments.

The first concert included performances of “New York, New York”, Henry Mancini’s “Pink Panther” and “Minnie The Moocher”.

The plan is for the Pop Orchestra to play popular classics, 20th century and other contemporary music.
