Veteran Stanwell employee Michael O’Rourke has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the State Government-owned corporation.

Mr O’Rourke has been Chief Financial Officer at Stanwell for the past nine years, and before that served in several senior positions including Executive General Manager – Corporate Governance and Strategy, and General Manager Corporate Services.

The appointment follows the shock resignation of long-serving CEO Richard Van Breda earlier this year.

Board chairman Paul Binsted announced Mr Van Breda’s resignation on April 23, just days after media fallout over comments made by Mr Van Breda at the Central Queensland Energy Futures Summit in Gladstone.

Mr Van Breda was appointed CEO at Stanwell in July 2012 after the restructure of the State Government-owned electricity generator.

Like Mr O’Rourke, Mr Van Breda was a former CFO at Stanwell and Tarong Energy.

Stanwell Director Adam Aspinall has been Acting CEO since Mr Van Breda left the corporation in May.

At the time Mr Binsted said Mr Aspinall had told the Board he did not wish to be considered as a candidate for the permanent role.
