A woman aged in her 50s has been airlifted to hospital with serious leg injuries after a horse-riding accident near Kilkivan on Friday afternoon.

An LifeFlight spokesperson said it was believed the woman was riding with five others when her horse became spooked by an alpaca in a nearby paddock.

The incident occurred on Rossmore Road, near Cemetery Road.

The woman is believed to have fallen off, before the horse fell backwards and landed on top of her.

Paramedics assisted the woman before LifeFlight’s Land Rover Special Mission helicopter, which is temporarily based on the Sunshine Coast, was called about lunchtime.

It landed on the road near where the incident occurred.

The woman was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
