Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio reacted with “surprise” after last week’s State Government announcement about the Wellcamp quarantine facility.

On Thursday morning, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced Queensland would be going it alone in partnership with the Wagner Corporation to build a quarantine facility near Wellcamp Airport.

Mayor Antonio said he was surprised he had not been told earlier by the Premier about the decision.

“But in saying that, a decision has been made by the State Government and they are legislatively able to make that kind of decision,” he said.

“I guess now, the first thing I would ask is that the State Government visits Toowoomba as soon as they possibly can to give myself and my colleagues and this community an update on where we are.”

Mayor Antonio say 22 questions about the proposal were sent to the State Government on February 11.

No answers had been received to these questions.

Mayor Antonio said he believed the way the whole thing had happened had shown a real lack of respect to himself personally and the Toowoomba community.

“I hope the State Government is prepared to listen to some of the concerns of Toowoomba,” he said.
