FLASHBACK: Kingaroy State High School students Indy Eriksen and Chevy Edwards at the 2019 Wondai Show … the last Wondai Show that has been able to go ahead

August 6, 2021

The 2021 Wondai Show, due to run on August 27-28, is the latest victim of the COVID-19 pandemic – but organisers have already started planning the 2022 event.

The Show Society posted the news about the cancellation on social media:

“Sadly no Wondai Show this year due to COVID. We value our aged and Indigenous population too much to risk it”.

It is the second year in a row the Wondai Show has had to be cancelled.

Secretary / treasurer Sue Hullock said the organising committee met on Thursday night and the vote was unanimous.

“Nearly all of our entertainment was coming from the lockdown area and so were a lot of our competitors, especially in the rodeo,” she said.

However, Sue emphasised the Rural Ambassador and Showgirl competitions were still going ahead.

The winners of these competitions will take part in the 2022 Queensland Shows sub-chamber competitions.

Entry forms to enter either competition are available at the Wondai newsagency; showgirl entries have been invited from girls and women aged between 4 and 28.

A small presentation night for the winners will be held at the Wondai Showgrounds in September (on a date to be confirmed).

The Wondai Show colouring-in competition for Prep to Year 6 – and the Lego competition – are also still going ahead.

Sue said she had been contacting sponsors for this year’s show.

All that she had spoken to so far had agreed to roll over their support to the 2022 event.

“We have already booked the fireworks and the climbing wall!” she said.

And the show ribbons and many of the trophies ordered for 2021 will also be able to be reused.

The cancellation of the Wondai Show means the show and shine planned to be run in conjunction with the event by the Goomeri Chrome Bumpers car club has also been cancelled, as has the Col Porter Memorial Truck Show.
