It’s taken almost three years but five community groups have finally been presented with pushbikes being held by the South Burnett Regional Council.

Council secured 15 Merida Big Nine bicycles following the successful State Government “Get on Your Bikes” program on the South Burnett Rail Trail in July 2018.

Initially, Council experimented with a bicycle hire scheme, but that proved unsuccessful.

In 2019, it was decided the bikes would for offered for free to any community group that wanted to start a bicycle hire service.

That idea also fell over.

Earlier this year, not-for-profit community groups were invited to submit an expression of interest to receive the bikes.

A Council spokesperson said seven applications were received.

The following community organisations were successful:

  • Wondai Regional Art Gallery – 4 bicycles
  • South Burnett Mountain Bike Club – 2
  • South Burnett CTC Youth Services – 3
  • Graham House Community Centre – 4
  • Nanango Cycle Club – 2

The organisations received their bicycles on May 12.
