The fate of 15 bicycles left over after a 2018 South Burnett Regional Council program to encourage more people to take up cycling may be finally known soon.

The bicycles were purchased with State Government funding for use in a  “Get Out, Get Active!” program on the South Burnett Rail Trail.

After the program ended, Council trialled a bike hire scheme for six weeks which ultimately failed due to a number of reasons, including poor promotion at the various hire points.

It was then decided in October 2019 that the bikes would for offered for free to any community group that wanted to start a bicycle hire service.

However, it appears no groups came forward to take up this idea.

This week, the SBRC issued an official “Invitation To Offer” seeking expressions of interest from South Burnett not-for-profit community groups.

They must explain what the intended use for the 15 “Merida Big Nine 40” bicycles will be.
