Community members living with a disability will soon enjoy better accessibility to Yarraman Memorial Pool with construction of a new changing room scheduled to begin later this year.

Toowoomba councillor James O’Shea said the new changing room would be built to meet current Australian standards.

He said the project was another step towards bringing Toowoomba Regional Council’s older facilities in line with modern building standards under the Disability Discrimination Act as well as meeting community expectations.

“Our region boasts a number of great community-based pools and aquatic centres, such as the Yarraman Memorial Pool. These facilities have long served the community but were constructed at a time when building access standards for people with a disability were vastly different to today,” Cr O’Shea said.

“We are pleased these works are going ahead to be more inclusive of all residents and to improve the experience for more members of our community who enjoy the pool in Yarraman.”

Cr O’Shea said the new changing room would be constructed in addition to the existing changing rooms and would include a wheelchair access path from the roadside entrance.

Construction is expected to be completed by early next year.
