Irrigators who buy water from one of the State Government’s irrigation schemes – such as Sunwater or SEQwater – will enjoy a 15 per cent price cut from July 1.

And some irrigators will also get a 35 per cent rebate on top of the 15 per cent, taking their total discount to 50 per cent.

Water Minister Glenn Butcher announced the price changes this week.

He said for many irrigators the discount would be automatic.

The extra rebate of 35 per cent would apply to horticultural growers growing fruit, vegetables, nuts and turf.

However, while this should benefit avocado growers in the Blackbutt area, many other farmers in the South Burnett will miss out on the 35 per cent bonus.

A spokesperson for Mr Butcher confirmed the rebate does not apply to peanuts, only tree nuts.

The Queensland Farmers Federation welcomed the announcement but said there was still work to do to achieve fair and equitable pricing for all irrigators across all commodities.
