The South Burnett Working Equitation Club, which is based in Nanango, held its first competition for 2021 on Sunday.

“The club was thrilled to be able to host the first Working Equitation competition for the 2021 calendar year at the Nanango Showgrounds,” club president Julie Brown said.

“After recent rain, the arenas were just beautiful to work on.

“We had 22 competitors from Gatton, Kilcoy, Tamborine, Noosa, Kilkivan, Blackbutt as well as Ellesmere, Kingaroy and Nanango all taking part in a wonderful schooling competition.

“Our club is very grateful for the support of the Nanango Show Society committee who graciously let us use their pristine grounds.

“Our club has gone from strength to strength and the camaraderie of our members and the larger working equitation family was evident on the day.

“Our next competition is the Horse of the Year Qualifier, being held on April 17-18. This is also a qualifying event for selection to the State team to compete at the National Finals in Tamworth in October.”

The South Burnett Working Equitation Club began in July 2019 and now has members ranging in age from 11 through to 70-plus.

Working Equitation is a dressage-based discipline which began in Europe and has gained in popularity in Australia. There are now seven clubs in Queensland.

Horses perform a dressage test, a maneability round (where they are judged on how correctly, obediently, stylishly and calmly they perform a series of obstacles) and a timed event (where they demonstrate their agility and speed).

At State and National competitions, they also do a cattle team penning phase.
