Murgon Diggers have locked in the first spot in the South Burnett Senior Cricket Competition Grand Final after downing Nanango in the Major Semi-Final played at Murgon Sportsground’s stables field on Saturday.

Nanango won the toss and batted first.

At the end of their 40 overs they were 7/177 with Joe Steinhardt top scoring with 31.

Tom Currin (2/17 off five overs, including two maidens) and Riley Sippel (3/44 off eight overs) were the pick of the Murgon bowlers.

In reply, Murgon overhauled the target in the 34th over for the loss of just three wickets.

Opener Andrew Roderick survived an early runout scare to secure his century, finishing not out 111 after hitting 16 fours and one six.

Simon Morrow (1/13), Stephen Kirkland (1/27) and Barry Heyns (1/29) took the three wickets.

The Scorpions will have a second chance when they meet Kumbia (see below) in next weekend’s Preliminary Final.

Wondai’s 2020-21 season is over after they were defeated by four wickets in the Minor Semi-Final at Kumbia Sportsground by the Kumbia Rattlers.

Wondai won the toss and batted first.

The visitors were all out for 152 in the 39th over with Jeremy Hobbs hitting a very handy 61 runs.

Roger Hoare took 3/8 off his eight overs – including four maidens – for the Rattlers.

In reply, Kumbia were 6/155 after 22.5 overs.

Ryan Kelly top-scored with 56 not out.

Jeremy Hobbs took 3/24 for Wondai.

Kumbia will now play Nanango Scorpions in this weekend’s Preliminary Final to determine the second Grand Final spot.

Stage 1

  • Kingaroy def. Nanango at River Road, Kingaroy

Stage 2

  • Kingaroy Northern AgriServices (5/119) def. Nanango (6/65) by 54 runs at Taabinga State School

Stage 3

  • Murgon (4/193) def. Nanango (7/174) by 19 runs at Nanango Sportsground. Josh Fearby hit an impressive 67 not out for Murgon.

All South Burnett junior and senior matches will be played at Nanango Sportsground this weekend.

The junior Grand Finals will begin at 8:00am for Stages 2 and 3 with the trophy presentation after the games at 11:30am.
