Motorists should keep an eye out this weekend for a group of cycling tourists who will be branching out from the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail to explore some of the back roads around the Cooyar and Upper Yarraman areas.

The 40 adult cyclists will be riding along the rail trail from Blackbutt to Yarraman on Saturday afternoon.

They will then head to Cooyar – where they’ll be staying overnight at the Cooyar Hotel – via Upper Yarraman and The Palms roads.

On Sunday morning, the group will be heading back to Blackbutt, this time via Mt Binga, Nukku and the Crows Nest-Blackbutt roads.

The tour has been organised by Noosa-based travel company Outbike / Arcadia Travel, which has been organising cycling tours in Australia and Europe since 2004.

Outbike’s Ralph Jackson said the average age of riders who take part in Outbike’s events is in their early 60s.

The group will leave their cars at Blackbutt and all their gear will be carried on a bus accompanying the riders.

“They will be adults, experienced riders and not racing,” Ralph said.

“We’ll have the bus following on the road sections with a rear sign to advise ‘riders ahead’.

“This is the first of what we plan to be a series of weekend loop rides combining rail trails and back roads.”

Ralph said Outbike had held rides in Victoria which linked up various rail trails, with riders staying overnight along the route.

The company was looking at exploring similar opportunities in the South Burnett.
