South Burnett Regional Council has started work on a new footpath at the Bunya Mountains which will improve safety for local residents and visitors.

The footpath will lead from the intersection of the Bunya Mountains Road down Bunya Avenue towards the Dandabah kiosk area.

It has been a key objective for local residents who have witnessed near misses between pedestrians and traffic on Bunya Avenue for years.

The footpath will consist of two parts: the top section will be a dedicated area on the side of the current roadway which will be painted green from the intersection to the entry of the Dandabah camping area.

The lower section will be a formed concrete footpath from the National Parks office leading to a new car park area which is also being constructed.

A small embankment has been levelled to provide a flat area for this bitumen car park.

Bunya Mountains Community Association Inc secretary Carol Weekes said work began on the footpath project at the start of November and it was progressing very quickly.

She said a dedicated area would be set aside in the car park to cater for the horse and carriage rides which are popular with tourists.

The SBRC received $150,000 funding from the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Program to assist with the project.
