The empty South Burnett Race Club track in Wondai on Saturday … no punters, no bookies, no fashions

October 19, 2020

Mahratta won the Wondai Cup on Saturday but there were no crowds to cheer the gelding home … or punters tearing up tickets.

Nor was there a trophy presentation to the owners or winning jockey.

And there was definitely no Fashions of the Field.

The South Burnett Race Club’s annual Wondai Cup meeting – which coincides with the running of the Caulfield Cup – is usually one of the biggest days of the year at the Wondai track.

But this year, COVID-19 restrictions meant there were only track officials, jockeys and trainers in attendance.

Race club officials told southburnett.com.au they regretted being unable to run a standard race meeting.

However, they were hopeful conditions would return to normal – or something close to it – by the time the club holds its next meeting on Anzac Day in 2021.
