The shortened 2020 AFL season is over for the South Burnett Saints with both the men’s and women’s teams being defeated in the Preliminary Finals played in Goondiwindi at the weekend.

It was always going to be a tough ask for the men’s team.

Goondiwindi were unbeaten in the fixture rounds and finished on top of the ladder.

The last time the two sides met in Goondiwindi, the Hawks demolished their South Burnett guests 17.11-113 to 0.6-6.

This time around, the final scoreline was much closer, with Goondiwindi finishing on top 13.7-85 to 4.8-32.

The Hawks got off to a strong start but the Saints narrowed the gap in the second quarter, to lag by just three goals at half-time.

The Saints’ women faced the South Toowoomba Bombers in a nail-biting, sudden-death final.

South Burnett were ahead at every change but were overhauled in the last quarter to lose by just one goal.

At half-time, the Saints were ahead 3.4-22 to 2.0-12 and maintained their lead at the end of the third quarter.

Saints’ goals were kicked by Brianna Pogany (2) and Sandy Jacobson.
