The South Burnett Race Club will be holding its annual Caulfield Cup meeting in on Saturday, October 17 . . . but thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic it will be patron-free this year

The South Burnett Race Club will be holding its annual Caulfield Cup meeting at Wondai racecourse as planned on Saturday, October 17, but the public won’t be able to attend.

The club has announced it will run the meeting under the Queensland Racing Industry’s COVID Safe plan.

Only essential racing personnel will be allowed on the course on race day.

The decision to make the meeting patron-free was taken after a meeting of race club officials last week.

A club spokesperson said the decision had been made reluctantly.

However, given the rapidly changing nature of COVID restrictions, it seemed the best course of action.

“We are, of course, trying our best to provide for the safety of patrons and all involved and would love to be in a position to offer access to patrons,” the spokesperson said.

The club is hopeful, however, that its popular Anzac Day, July and October race meetings will be able to return to normal operations next year.
