A 25-year-old man has been charged after he allegedly escaped mandatory hotel quarantine as part of COVID-19 border restrictions in Toowoomba.

The Glenvale man allegedly left the hotel premises on the ninth day of his 14-day quarantine in breach of his obligations under the Public Health Act.

He returned to the hotel on Wednesday where he was arrested by police and charged with failing to comply with the COVID-19 Chief Health Officer’s Public Health Direction.

He appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday.

A police spokesperson said the man received a negative COVID-19 test result overnight and there was no risk to the local community.

The QPS is conducting an independent review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
