Vietnam veteran Athol Millar, from Blackbutt, could hardly believe it when he was told his service medals had been found after being missing for 36 years.

Athol was still a serving member in the Australian Army when he and wife returned to their Burpengary home after enjoying an Easter break to discover their house had been burgled.

Never expecting to see his medals again, Athol ordered a replacement set.

But early this year he was advised the original medals had been found!

The medals were in a suitcase full of items handed into an op shop.

The shop passed them on to the Gympie RSL Sub-Branch which contacted the Department of Veteran Affairs.

The medals were traced back to Athol, who is now retired and living in Blackbutt.

The medals were forwarded to the Blackbutt RSL who arranged for the medals to be presented to Athol recently.
